One year I had a friend whose little boy was turning 1 and she wanted a simple, but special cake in the shape of a number 1. I made a half sheet cake and cut it out in the 1 shape, then decorated it by free hand piping designs of all of his favorite things (balls, firetrucks, etc.). It was very cute. Sometimes the simplest cakes are the best cakes.
